Edakkal archives of the Neolithic-iron age engravings stand out distinct among the magnitude of pre-historic visual archives of paintings and graphic signs all over the world.



perched on the crest of a hill in the western ghats, about 4000 feet above sea level, is the largest collection of petrglyphs (rock carvings or engraves) in india, dating back to the Neolithic period ib bc 4000-1500, the collection is also the earliest and most stylized rock drawings in india.
 



Besides, the  cave contains about nine epigraphs(inscriptions) . seven of the earliest known are there in a single cave at edakkal making it a veritable epigraphical treasure-trove.
